Guide to steak doneness

Hello Kitchen lovers! How do you and your family like your steak? Do you know how to achieve the perfect level of doneness? Here is a simple guide to know the level of doneness of your steak when you want to do a barbeque at home for you and your family.

Steak doneness is based on thickness, color, juiciness depending on the cut and quality of the steak. Thicker steaks require lower heat, and thinner steaks require hotter heat. Get yourself a thermometer to know when your steak is ready.

 Types of doneness:

Rare: 
Characteristics: Seared on the outside showing bright red color center. Center is slightly cool.
Internal Steak Temperature: 125–130 °F

1 minute each side on the grill

 

Medium-Rare:
Characteristics: Seared on the outside with the center showing a red color, slightly firmer than rare.  
Internal Steak Temperature: 130–140 °F

2 minutes each side on the grill

 

Medium:
Characteristics: Firm with pink center. 
Internal Steak Temperature: 140–150 °F

3 minutes each side on the grill

 

Medium-Well:
Characteristics: Small amount of pink in the center
Internal Steak Temperature: 150–155 °F

4 minutes each side on the grill

 

Well-Done:
Characteristics: No pink, firmer meat
Internal Steak Temperature: 160+ °F

5 minutes or more each side on the grill
